Three Rounds In: The Small Details Matter
One of the reasons we created the Pivot Garage 25-Round Audit is because golf products rarely reveal their strengths or weaknesses during the first round.
Sometimes the honeymoon phase wears off quickly.
Other times, a product quietly becomes something you can’t imagine playing without.
After three rounds with the Journal18 Track Pad Pro, I’m beginning to see both sides of that equation.
There are already features that I genuinely look forward to using every round. In fact, a few pages have become part of my routine before I even leave the green. At the same time, there are a couple of design decisions that feel like they could have been refined just a little more.
The encouraging part?
None of the issues I’ve found affect the core purpose of the Track Pad Pro.
If anything, they reinforce my belief that with a few thoughtful tweaks, this could become one of the most useful accessories serious golfers carry.

A Quick Refresher
When the Track Pad Pro entered the Pivot Garage, my biggest question wasn’t whether it could collect statistics.
Plenty of products can do that.
The real question was whether collecting those statistics would actually help me become a better golfer.
That remains the goal of this audit.
Not simply recording numbers.
Using those numbers to make smarter decisions.
After three rounds, I’m already starting to see patterns in my game that I might have overlooked otherwise.
The Size Is Just About Perfect
One thing I appreciated immediately in Round 1 continues to impress me after several rounds.
The size.
The Track Pad Pro fits comfortably into my back pocket without ever becoming distracting.
It isn’t bulky.
It doesn’t shift around while walking.
It doesn’t interfere with swinging or bending over to read putts.
That may sound like a small detail, but if you’re carrying something for four hours every round, comfort matters.
Journal 18 absolutely got the overall dimensions right.
I’ve almost forgotten it’s there until I need it.
That’s exactly how a golf accessory should feel.
The Pen… Needs a Better Home
If there’s one thing that has become increasingly noticeable through three rounds, it’s the pen.
More specifically, where it’s stored.
Right now, the pen rides exposed along the outside edge of the holder.
On paper, that seems convenient.
On the golf course, it’s been a little frustrating.
I’ve already found the pen catching on my pocket while pulling the Track Pad Pro out. There have also been moments where it simply feels more awkward than it needs to be.
It’s a small annoyance.
But it’s one that happens several times during a round.
Personally, I think there’s a much cleaner solution.
I’d love to see Journal 18 redesign the holder with a smaller pen stored inside the cover itself instead of exposed along the side.
Not only would it create a cleaner appearance, but I think it would make accessing the notebook smoother and eliminate one of the only frustrations I’ve experienced so far.
It’s the kind of change that wouldn’t require reinventing the product, just refining it.
Three Pages I Already Depend On
While there are things I’d tweak, there are also features that have become indispensable after only three rounds.
These are the pages I find myself using constantly.
Shot Tracker – Approaches
This has probably become my favorite page in the entire Track Pad Pro.
Recording distance to the flag on approach shots is incredibly valuable.
Over time, those numbers begin telling a story.
Which yardages am I strongest from?
Where am I consistently missing?
Am I actually as good from 150 yards as I think I am?
The beauty of this page isn’t simply collecting information.
It’s identifying trends.
Those trends eventually become practice priorities.
Instead of guessing what needs work, you know.
For serious golfers, that’s invaluable.
Drives
This page surprised me.
Initially, I thought I’d simply be marking fairways hit.
Instead, I’ve found myself paying much closer attention to where the golf ball finishes.
Left rough.
Right rough.
Center fairway.
Fairway bunker.
Those distinctions matter.
Simply writing down “missed fairway” doesn’t tell the whole story.
Knowing your miss pattern absolutely does.
That information becomes incredibly useful when evaluating drivers, golf shafts, or simply course management decisions.
As someone constantly testing equipment inside the Pivot Garage, this page may become one of my favorite long-term resources.
Make & Miss Putting Tracker
Putting statistics are often oversimplified.
Greens in Regulation.
Putts per Round.
Three Putts.
Those numbers don’t tell the complete story.
The Make & Miss tracking page does.
Seeing exactly where putts are converted, and more importantly where opportunities are missed, provides a much clearer picture of putting performance.
After only three rounds, I’ve already started noticing tendencies I probably wouldn’t have remembered after the round.
Memory fades.
Data doesn’t.
If These Were the Only Three Pages…
Here’s what’s really interesting.
If the Track Pad Pro only included these three sections:
- Shot Tracker – Approaches
- Drives
- Make & Miss Putting
…I honestly think I’d still carry it every round.
That’s how useful they’ve become.
Together they provide:
- Driving accuracy
- Miss tendencies
- Approach performance
- Distance control
- Putting trends
- Scoring opportunities
That’s an incredible amount of meaningful information without ever feeling overwhelming.
Sometimes less is actually more.
Waiting to Hear Back
One thing I appreciate about companies building products for golfers is when they’re willing to listen.
I’ve reached out to Journal 18 with a handful of questions and suggestions after my first few rounds.
Nothing major.
Mostly small usability improvements.
I’m interested to hear their thoughts because I genuinely believe the foundation of this product is excellent.
Sometimes the difference between a really good product and a great one comes down to the little details.
This feels like one of those cases.
The Bigger Picture
One thing has become increasingly clear.
The Track Pad Pro isn’t really about statistics.
It’s about awareness.
The more rounds you play with it, the harder it becomes to rely on memory alone.
Instead of saying,
“I feel like I’ve been driving it well.”
You’ll know.
Instead of saying,
“I think my wedges are improving.”
You’ll have evidence.
That’s the real value.
Not collecting numbers.
Understanding your game.

Early Verdict After Three Rounds
Three rounds into this audit, the Journal 18 Track Pad Pro has already earned a spot in my golf bag.
Not because it’s perfect.
Because it’s useful.
The few design criticisms I have, particularly around the exposed pen holder, feel fixable.
The core experience, however, has exceeded my expectations.
The more I use the approach tracking, driving page, and make & miss putting statistics, the more I realize how much valuable information I’ve been leaving on the golf course for years.
If Journal 18 continues refining the user experience while maintaining the simplicity that makes the Track Pad Pro so enjoyable to use, I genuinely believe this product has the potential to become a staple in a lot of golfers’ bags.
The next 22 rounds will tell us if that first impression holds true.
